Saving Money On Your Heating And Cooling With Custom-Made Window Inserts

Posted on: 28 March 2022

Custom-made window inserts for your home can be highly beneficial and allow you to keep the house's classic, original windows while adding a thermal barrier that will not damage the frames. There are several styles of window inserts available, but they are all similar and work the same way once installed.

Energy Reduction

Old windows can be drafty, and even if they have been restored to a nearly new condition, they can not provide the thermal barrier you get from storm windows or multipaned glass. If you are restoring a historic home, you may be limited to window options that retain the look of the original panes, so adding window inserts inside the house can be an excellent solution.

Window inserts are acrylic and have a frame and flexible seal around the outside edge. They are custom-made, so they push into the existing window frame without marring or damaging it, thereby significantly increasing the window's energy efficiency. The amount of energy savings you see in your home can vary by window brand and other conditions, so it is best to talk with the manufacturer or dealer you are considering buying from to get the details.

Once the window inserts are constructed and arrive at your home, putting them in place is as easy as positioning them in the window frame and pushing around the edges to engage the seal to the frame. If you want to take them out to open a window when the weather is nice, you can pull the insert out and set it aside until you are ready to close the window. When the window inserts are in place, they should be nearly invisible and not reduce the view of your home windows. Some manufacturers also offer colored frames on their inserts so you can choose a color that will be unobtrusive and make them harder to see.

Noise Reduction

Along with additional energy savings, window inserts can reduce noise coming from outside the home. If you live on a busy street or there is a lot of noise from businesses, kids, or other activities outside your home, installing custom window inserts can help. The amount of noise your inserts will block is typically high enough to notice the difference right away. Still, most manufacturers will only give an average percentage rating to the reduction because other variables can come into play. If you have other issues with the home, like limited insulation, you may find that you do not see as much reduction in exterior noise as a tight home would, but if sound reduction is your primary reason for installing window inserts, talk with the dealer about the options that are going to provide the most sound reduction.

If you like, you can even leave them open during your crowded pool party or other summer event at your home. On this blog, you will discover the many benefits sliding doors have to offer. Enjoy!
